What You Need to Know About Charging $5000 for a Web Design Package

As a new web designer it can be difficult to set your rates. Kristen from Kristen Leigh is discussing how to charge more for your web design packages so you can grow your web design business.

One of the biggest things I see my Web Design Money Maker students struggle with is confidently raising their prices. For newer web designers it makes you feel more comfortable charging just a few hundred dollars for a website because – and I quote – “I don’t have enough experience yet to charge a thousand or thousands of dollars.”

The thing is, while experience is necessary for charging thousands of dollars for a website, even some of the most experienced designers are incapable of landing clients at higher prices.

Now don’t groan and think, “great… that means if I raise my web design prices I won’t be able to land clients.” Keep reading!

Web design package features

Below are the features that were included in a web design package I charged roughly $400 for:

  • 8 page WordPress website
  • Lifetime access to the Divi theme (SAVINGS of $89/year)
  • Custom “coming soon” page
  • Complimentary favicon
  • 2 rounds of edits
  • Customized blog with blog post template
  • Two 40 minute calls, two 60 minute calls
  • Google Analytics setup and video tutorials
  • Tutorial video library
  • 30 day post launch support

Below are the features that were included in a web design package I charged $4,597 for:

  • 8 page WordPress website
  • Lifetime access to the Divi theme (SAVINGS of $89/year)
  • Custom “coming soon” page
  • Complimentary favicon
  • 2 rounds of edits
  • Customized blog with blog post template
  • Two 40 minute calls, two 60 minute calls
  • Google Analytics setup and video tutorials
  • Tutorial video library
  • 30 day post launch support

Do you see anything different about the two packages? If you said yes… I’m giving you the side eye right now because those two packages include the exact same features!

Charge more for your services with proper messaging

So why was I able to increase my web design package price by over $4,000 and still land clients when my packages were exactly the same? That’s simple. Your pricing is based on 10% experience, 5% features, and 85% messaging.

That means, you could have five years of experience as a web designer, have built 100+ websites, and have a killer package optimized to your leads wants and still only be able to land clients when your packages are priced under $1,000. Or, you could have six months experience as a web designer, have built just five websites, have a killer package and easily land clients with $5,000 packages.

The difference here is that the web designer charging $5,000 knows how to message their packages correctly – even though they’ve only been in business for six months. The web designer who struggles to charge more than $1,000 doesn’t – even though they’ve been in business for five years.

What makes messaging “good”?

Simple. You talk about the benefits of each feature included in your package rather than the features themselves.

When I messaged and marketed this $400 package below, I messaged the features of the package – the actual physical features that were included in the package; the physical things my clients were walking away with once their website launched.

  • 8 page WordPress website
  • Lifetime access to the Divi theme (SAVINGS of $89/year)
  • Custom “coming soon” page
  • Complimentary favicon
  • 2 rounds of edits
  • Customized blog with blog post template
  • Two 40 minute calls, two 60 minute calls
  • Google Analytics setup and video tutorials
  • Tutorial video library
  • 30 day post launch support

But when I messaged and marketed the $4,597 package, I didn’t talk about the features. Instead, I talked about the benefits associated with each individual feature and how that would add value to the lead’s website and business.

This is why I was able to keep the exact same package and raise the price from $400 to $2,000 to $3,097 to $3,597 and lastly to $4,597 and still land clients consistently.

It’s when you start talking about the value you’re providing to your clients rather than the physical end product they’ll end up with that you can confidently charge more for your web design packages and still land clients.
