Are there too many web designers in the world for it to be worth your time learning web design as a virtual assistant? Short answer: no – here’s why.
The very first recurring virtual assistant client I landed had me designing quote graphics for her Instagram account. I’d search Unsplash for a photo of a majestic animal, drop it into Canva, and copy and paste whatever quote my client had sent to me into that graphic. Then I’d head over to Later and add it to her Instagram schedule with a bunch of hashtags I had researched.
This work was mind-numbingly boring to me. As easy as it was, it felt like a chore. Something I had to do instead of something I wanted to do.
But it’s funny… since I had landed a social media client so easily, I believed that the social media industry was easy to get into. That there weren’t too many “social media virtual assistants” or “social media managers” in the world yet.
Fast forward by like 6 or 8 months and I was trying so hard to land a web design client. It was so freaking hard. In my mind – and even on my website – I had set prices for my web design services. But when I’d get on a sales call, I’d reduce the price to land the client.
- “You charge how much?!”
- “I know someone who would do it for just a few hundred dollars.”
- “There’s another web designer who charges that amount for an ecommerce site which is way more work than what I’m looking for.”
I was constantly being told that there are a ton of other fish in the sea. Ton of other fish in the sea = oversaturated industry. Oversaturated industry = I shouldn’t even try.
There are two things wrong with that statement above.
- The web design industry is not oversaturated.
- Even if a million other people are doing what you want to do, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to do it, too.
Yes, there are A TON of web designers in the world. Way more than there were 10 years ago. Heck, there are probably way more web designers in the world today than there were just 2 years ago.
There’s a reason for that though. As a society we’re becoming more digital dependent by the day. Restaurants that don’t allow online ordering won’t survive. Clothing stores that don’t allow online shopping won’t survive. Small businesses without a website won’t survive.
Businesses without websites won’t survive. Maybe they’ll survive short term but if they’re in it for the long haul then a website is necessary. The need for a website isn’t going to decrease over time. If anything, it’s going to become even more necessary for a businesses survival.
So yes, while there are probably hundreds of thousands of people out there that offer web design, there are not too many web designers in the world… the web design industry is not oversaturated. The amount of web designers matches the demand and the need for this type of work.
Why you feel there are too many web designers in the world
The only way you’d feel the web design industry is oversaturated is if you’re struggling to land your ideal client – one who pays you what you ask for without making you feel the need to reduce your prices just to land a client.
Instead you’re landing sales calls with people who expect a 5 page website for a couple hundred dollars. Instead you’re landing sales calls with people who want an ecommerce site built for under a thousand dollars.
So if that’s you right now, it’s okay. The remainder of this post will help!
How to stand out in an “oversaturated market” by eliminating the web design competition
Every business owner has the simple opportunity to eliminate their competition. That goes for you, too. You are not in competition with every single web designer out there. I’d even argue that you aren’t in competition with any other web designer out there.
Hundreds of students have gone through our program Web Design Money Maker and none of them are in competition with each other because they’ve learned how to eliminate the competition by using the Web Design Income System.
Here’s a little breakdown on why our students (and you) aren’t in competition with anyone else.
Every web designer is unique
You’ve probably heard this before. Maybe your mom told you in high school and it caused you to roll your eyes. Or your best friend told you this after a tough breakup and you ignored her because you’d just been dumped. Well, regardless of all that… I’m telling you again!
You’re unique. Every single web designer is unique.
You’re not in competition with other web designers because there’s something different about you. That thing that makes you different causes you to run your business differently, causes you to build websites differently, and causes you to interact with leads and clients differently.
And when you combine your uniqueness with the fact that every single lead and client is also unique, you’ll find that there’s a ton of people out there who want to work with you over Web Designer Wendy.
That’s step one. Accepting the fact that you’re unique and then diving into what makes you unique. Is it your web design process? Is it your bubbly personality? Is it your pricing?
“There’s nothing unique about me, Kristen.”
WRONG. There’s absolutely something unique about you! Typically other people have a more realistic view on what makes us unique and different so if you’re struggling to figure out your unique qualities, ask a family member or a friend what makes you unique.
You know your Problem Niche Statement
Eliminating the competition is really just a two part process. First you know what makes you unique and next you know the problem you’re solving and how to message it correctly.
If you don’t know your Problem Niche Statement it’s going to be very difficult for you to not feel like the web design industry is oversaturated. It’s going to be very difficult for you to make web design a number one source of income in your virtual assistant business. I don’t say that to be a Debbie Downer, I say that to be truthful. To be honest.
Just because you don’t know your Problem Niche Statement now doesn’t mean you can’t write one. I talk all about how following the Problem Niche Process (which helps you write your statement) is the first step to establishing web design as one of your main services in our free training.
This statement is what connects with your people – with your ideal client. It’s what lets a lead know whether you’re the right web designer for them without having to get on a sales call and realize that they’re actually not ready to commit to the transformation you’re providing at the price you’re providing it for.
Attracting the right people and never feeling like you need to reduce your prices on a sales call to compete in an “oversaturated market”… that’s what you want!
You can click right here to sign up for the free training and start learning about how to write your Problem Niche Statement and make web design a number one source of income without any previous web design skills.
There aren’t too many web designers in the world
No, there are not too many web designers in the world for where society and technology are currently at unless you’re unaware of how you’re unique or if you can’t confidently state your Problem Niche Statement.
Those two key pieces of information will eliminate your competition. Those two key pieces of information will take what you believe to be an oversaturated market and open your eyes to the fact that it never was oversaturated to begin with.
Remember, if you’re struggling to determine either of those things – what makes you unique or your Problem Niche Statement – we help you through the process inside of Web Design Money Maker and we’d love to have you!
