Typically I only blog about web design but every once in a while I do something that works really well for me and I feel like I have to share it!

I recently started growing my email because I’ve learned a lot about how people on your email list are your most valuable customers.

Think about it…

When someone comes to your website or sees you on social media, they’re following along but they’re not necessarily invested in you and your business. They may have stumbled upon your Instagram account somewhere or clicked through a Pin to your website. But they haven’t said “Hey I want to hear from you ALL. THE. TIME.”

And on social media, they’re not guaranteed to see anything you post. The algorithm on every social media platform varies and is always changing (usually in a way that doesn’t benefit businesses). And who, other than social media managers, has the time to keep up with the ever-changing algorithm? I certainly don’t! But because of this, when you make a post, your followers may not even see it.

Same goes for your website. If you blog, people aren’t guaranteed to see that. They would have to actively go to your website to see the new blog post if they aren’t being notified in some other way (ahem… like in an email). Sure, you may share your new blog posts on Pinterest but that still doesn’t guarantee that the same people will see all your posts.

BUT! If someone is on your email list they are saying “Hey I want to hear from you ALL. THE. TIME. because you’re cool and I like your stuff.”  And you know what? According to a Forbes article, on average people check their email 15 times per day. So when you send out an email about your new blog post or a new service/product you’re putting out, it’s guaranteed to land in front of their eyes because it’s in their inbox. And they’ll have (on average) 15 chances to see it, open it, and read it.

So how do you grow your email list?

I’m no expert in the area of growing an email list (remember… web design is my thing) but I need to know where to place email opt-in forms on my client’s websites to ensure their new subscriber goal is easily met (if that is one of their goals).

A few months ago I added a few email opt-in forms to my website to begin growing my list of subscribers. I added two opt-in forms on my homepage, one on every single blog post, and one as a pop-up.

And guess what I’ve found…

75% of my email subscribers have come from the pop up email opt in form! 75% PEOPLE!!! That’s huge! That’s not like a measly 1-2%, that’s 3 out of 4 people who opt into my list. Imagine what my list would look like if I didn’t have that pop up opt-in form.

How to create your own pop up email opt in form

Most major email marketing providers should have a way for you to create a pop up email opt in form – one that allows you to track views and conversion rate. Mine was created using Mailerlite and it was super simple to make.

I logged into my account and designed a new pop up opt in form. After the design was done, I was presented with a bunch of different options for when the pop up would appear, who would see it,  where they would see it, and how frequently website visitors would see it.

Here are my settings:

  • Wait 5 seconds before showing the pop up
  • Show the popup again if the same user didn’t subscribe after 1 days
  • Show on every page of my website

Here are some other options available:

  • Show when the user scrolls to 50% (the percentage is adjustable)
  • Show before closing page
  • Show the popup again if the same user didn’t subscribe after X days/weeks/months
  • Always show
  • Hide on specific pages
  • Only show on specific pages
  • Hide on desktop
  • Hide on mobile devices
  • Hide on tablet devices

So many options guys! So you can customize it, test things out, analyze the data, and make adjustments as needed!
